It’s impossible to choose a single memory that gets anywhere close to expressing what Big Canoe has meant to me for the last 25 years.
I tried!
But when I close my eyes and think of camp, I think of walking up the hill by myself and getting to the point where it just crests and all the activity at the top becomes visible. I see kids running, balls flying around, hear people shouting and laughing, see the faces of some of my favourite and most cherished people. I remember the excitement I felt every single time I climbed that hill towards the lodge, knowing something hilarious and wonderful was always waiting for me there.
You’d think you’d get tired of climbing a big hill a bunch of times every day, but it’s worth it every single time!
